We are “NRPP” (National Radon Proficiency Program) Certified and members of “AARST” (American Association of Radon Scientist and Technicians) We perform radon testing for pre-sale inspections, new construction, homeowners and sellers of homes. We use the “Sun Nuclear” 1030 Sentinel Continuous Monitors for testing. The radon test runs for 48 hours.

Facts about Radon Gas

  • Radon is a gas formed by the breakdown of uranium which is found in high levels in Michigan
  • Every home is susceptible to radon, even new construction, slab on grade, old homes, home near lakes
  • Radon is unpredictable. Barometric pressure, outdoor temperatures and multiple other factors  causes changes in radon Gas levels.
  • Radon is present in all homes.
  • 4 pCi/L Radon Level is equal to 200 chest X-Rays (4 pCi/L is the action level to remediate).
  • Radon can be present in a home without a sump pit.
  • Radon can be present in a  home with a slab.
  • Radon levels are reduced to a much lower level when a properly installed remediation system is in place.
  • When the Radon gas reaches it’s half life, which is part of the decay process, the Radon Gas turns into Polonium 218 and releases Alpha partials which you are breathing in. This is like a shot gun blast to your lung cells and your DNA when the Alpha particals are breathed in. This occurs again when the the it turns to Polium

Lung Cancer

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, responsible for thousands of deaths each year. Exposure to radon causes no immediate symptoms, but the long-term threat of lung cancer is significant to everyone. People who have never smoked make up approximately 2,900 of the estimated 21,000 radon-related lung cancer deaths each year. 1

The health hazard comes from the radioactive particles that are emitted as radon decays. Those particles can be inhaled into the lung and bombard your cells with dangerous, cancer-causing radiation. 4

Smoking and radon exposure can separately increase the risk of lung cancer. But if you smoke, know that exposure to both greatly enhances the risk of lung cancer.

Radon testing is recommended by the  EPA , The Surgeon General, The American Lung 0Association and the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ)

Radon Testing Procedures

  • CLOSED BUILDING CONDITIONS MUST BE MAINTAINED:

    • All windows and doors MUST be kept CLOSED except for brief door opening for entry and exit.
    • Large Whole house fans should not be used during the test period. Bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans should be operated only as needed and briefly.
    • Heating and air conditioning may be operated in auto mode during closed building conditions.
    • Fireplaces should be turned off during testing.
    • PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH THE MONITOR. It detects movement, power interruption and sudden changes in temperature and humidity. Tampering with the test device will result in retesting (invalid test) and payment of an additional testing fee.
    • This equipment is safe for occupants and pets.
    • This is a 48-hour test being performed under the guidelines of the National Radon Proficiency Program/ EPA and is a Government Sanctioned Test
